Younger children do best with you next to them
The lessons are written to be read by the student, but a Year 3 or 4 child gets a lot further with an adult in the room.
- Get them set up, then let them drive. Open the lesson on their tablet or laptop and hand it over. Sitting alongside for the first few lessons is usually enough.
- Read the question together when they stall. At this age a wrong answer is more often a misread question than a gap in the maths. Point at the words rather than giving the answer.
- Keep it short and regular. Two or three short sessions a week beat one long one, and stopping while they still feel like they are winning is what brings them back.
- Praise the second attempt. Getting it wrong, opening the worked solution and going again is the part that actually builds the learning — notice that out loud, not just the score.
